Masters Degree and No Idea Who I Was

How Many Of Us Spend Most Of Our Lives Studying to become lawyers, doctors, musicians, historians, accountants...

We pin our identities on the things do as a career or on the things we are passionate about. We can’t get enough of learning about those things but are we missing a vital area of study that would make perhaps the most sense to study.

Ourselves!

How many people can say they have taken time to actually study themselves to actually try to understand who we REALLY are. Why we think in the way we do! What motivates us! What moves us! What our purpose is! What our values are!

I have a masters degree but the year I spent trying to figure out who I was was the best year of study I ever did.

Why bother doing the work?

Because it is very easy to spend your life busy working towards some goal you set when you were just finishing school. You set your mind on a target and study and strive to become a great x, y or z. But what happens when you get to your destination and it’s not what you hoped it would be? Or if you are suddenly no longer able to do the thing you dreamed of? Who are you then?

I believe we should all do the work to find out who we are independent from the identities/roles we take on in life.

If you ask most people to tell you who they are, they will say:
I’m a doctor / accountant / opera singer
I’m a mother / wife / daughter / son
I’m a Christian / Muslim
We identify as things which are transient. We may not always be in those jobs... then what.
We may not always be married. Relationships can break down.
We may not always have faith.

Then what?

It’s in those times that we will most need to know who we are. What we are capable of. What will get us out of a depression. What will calm our minds in a storm of anxiety. It’s in the times when we have nothing that we will need to know that we are everything.

I had to do a lot of searching to find the answers I needed when I hit crisis point. I was the lowest I’d ever been. I was surrounded by people who loved me but I was alone because I had lost who I was. No masters degree was going to help me out then.

I’ve recently put together a 6 week Online Course which deals with the fundamentals of what makes us who we are.

    This blog is all about
Healthy Mindset, Mental Health Discussions and Lifestyle Tips.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after 15 years of suffering from emotional instability and depression.

This blog is inspired by the skills, tools and philosophies that I have discovered on my journey to finding out who I am without the mask of depression and in my jounrey to become a life coach,  all of which have helped me change my life from one of depression,  over eating, over drinking and emotional turmoil  to one of great joy, emotional stability, health and fitness.

It's important to talk about mental health! If you agree, then this is the blog for you!
